ERP built for Indian GST and operations

What does an ERP consultant in India do?

An ERP consultant helps Indian manufacturers, distributors, contractors and service companies move from Tally, spreadsheets and messaging apps to one connected system. The design has to handle GST returns, e-invoicing with an IRN where it applies, e-way bills, TDS and separate GSTINs for each state registration. I compare Zoho, Odoo, ERPNext and other options without vendor ties, then guide implementation, migration and rollout across plants and branches remotely.

Last reviewed by Vikas Saroj

I work with businesses across India, from manufacturers and distributors to contractors, facility management firms and service companies. Many run on Tally for accounts, with spreadsheets and messaging apps for sales, purchasing, inventory and approvals, and now need one connected system.

India has its own requirements: GST compliance and returns, e-invoicing with an Invoice Reference Number for applicable businesses, e-way bills for the movement of goods, TDS on payments, and multiple GSTINs for businesses registered in more than one state.

As an independent consultant, I compare Zoho, Odoo, ERPNext and other platforms on how well they handle these needs, not on any vendor relationship. Then I help you implement, migrate and automate, with documentation your team can rely on after go-live.

What I Do

ERP services for Indian businesses

ERP selection, implementation and automation shaped around Indian GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills and multi-state operations.

ERP Selection

I assess platforms against your real needs, including GST returns, e-invoicing, e-way bills, TDS, multi-state GSTINs and industry processes, so the system you choose fits how your business actually operates.

GST Configuration

I set up GST tax codes, HSN and SAC details, place of supply logic and account mappings based on your chartered accountant's guidance, so GSTR return data comes from the system rather than spreadsheets.

E-Invoicing and E-Way Bills

I configure and test e-invoice generation with IRN and e-way bill workflows through the platform's built-in features or a GST service provider, so documents are generated as part of normal sales and dispatch.

Tally Migration

I plan the move off Tally: cleaning ledgers and item masters, deciding what history to bring across, reconciling opening balances and choosing a sensible cutover point around your return periods.

Multi-GSTIN and Multi-Branch

I set up branches, warehouses and GSTINs across states, with stock transfers, interstate supplies and consolidated reporting so management sees the whole business in one place.

Automation and Integrations

I connect your ERP to banking, payroll, e-commerce and CRM tools, and automate approvals, purchasing, collections and reporting so your team spends less time chasing information.

GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills and TDS in one system

GST compliance in India depends on clean transaction data. Outward supplies, inward supplies and tax liability are reported through GSTR returns, and input tax credit depends on your records matching what suppliers report. When invoices are raised in one tool and purchases tracked in another, reconciliation becomes a monthly struggle.

E-invoicing adds another step for businesses it applies to: invoice data is reported to the government's Invoice Registration Portal, which returns an Invoice Reference Number and a signed QR code that must appear on the invoice. E-way bills are needed for many movements of goods, and TDS has to be deducted, tracked and reported on applicable payments.

In my ERP consulting work, I set up GST codes, HSN and SAC details, place of supply logic, TDS sections and e-document workflows with your chartered accountant's input, then test them before go-live. I do not give tax or legal advice. Because rules and applicability change, I always recommend confirming compliance features with the software vendor and your tax advisor.

Moving off Tally and choosing between Zoho, Odoo and ERPNext

Tally is the starting point for a large share of Indian businesses, and it handles accounting and GST well. Problems usually appear as the business grows: inventory across branches, manufacturing, project costing, approval workflows, CRM and field teams that need mobile access. At that point, spreadsheets around Tally become the real system.

Several platforms have strong India localization. Zoho is an Indian company headquartered in Chennai, and Zoho Books and the wider Zoho suite include India editions with GST features built in. Odoo offers an India localization for GST accounting and reporting, and ERPNext, developed by India-based Frappe, has India compliance features available for GST, e-invoicing and e-way bills. The right fit depends on your processes, team, customization needs and cost of ownership, so I compare them openly. My Zoho vs Odoo and Odoo vs ERPNext articles go deeper.

When migrating from Tally, I clean ledgers and item masters, decide what history to bring across, reconcile opening balances and plan the cutover around your GST return periods.

Integration with GST tools, banks and sales channels in India

Indian ERP projects involve more external connections than most. E-invoices and e-way bills are usually generated through APIs, often via a GST Suvidha Provider, and the IRN and QR code must come back into the ERP. Supplier payments go out as bulk files or through corporate net banking, customer collections arrive by UPI, cards and bank transfers through payment gateways, and payroll handles PF, ESI and professional tax, often in a separate HR product.

Sales channels add another layer. Brands selling on Amazon or Flipkart need marketplace orders, returns and settlement reports reconciled against the ledger, and manufacturers with dealer networks may run a distributor management system that must share price lists, schemes and secondary sales data with the ERP.

For each integration I document the trigger, data fields, owner and failure handling, and test with real sample data before go-live. I pay particular attention to e-invoice cancellations, credit notes and failed API calls, because these are where compliance gaps appear. My ERP integration and ERP data migration services cover the detail. If you want to know how an independent engagement with me is structured, see freelance ERP consultant in India.

Rolling out an ERP across plants, branches and distributors

Many Indian businesses run a head office, several plants or warehouses and a dealer network spread across states. A big-bang go-live across all of them is risky. I usually recommend a pilot at one location, a stabilization period, then a planned sequence for the rest, with each site's masters and opening stock verified before it joins.

Multi-state operations shape the design. Each GSTIN needs its own series, registrations and returns, and stock transfers between branches in different states are treated as supplies, so they need tax invoices and e-way bills rather than simple transfer notes. Site teams often work on mobile devices with patchy connectivity, so I check offline behavior and keep entry screens simple. Training material is written in plain language that your internal champions can translate and adapt for local teams.

Platform fit matters here too. Zoho has strong mobile apps for field and sales teams, Odoo and ERPNext handle multi-company and multi-warehouse setups well, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 is often relevant for Indian subsidiaries of multinational groups. If the rollout needs detailed site-by-site requirements first, see my ERP business analyst page, or return to my India overview.

Working with businesses across India

I work remotely with businesses across India, across multiple states and cities. Remote delivery works well for ERP projects when there is a clear scope, a shared plan, regular working sessions and decisions recorded in writing.

Workshops, reviews and training are scheduled within Indian working hours, and asynchronous updates, recorded walkthroughs and a shared project tracker keep branch teams aligned between calls. That is particularly useful for businesses with plants, warehouses or sites in several states.

Common industries I work with include manufacturing, trading and distribution, construction and contracting, and facility management. Many of these businesses also need a stronger sales process and lead management alongside the ERP, which I can cover through CRM consulting and automation.

Before recommending any technology, I take time to understand how your business actually runs: who approves what, where information gets stuck and which reports leadership relies on. If you are planning a new system, get in touch to talk through your requirements.

FAQ

Questions About ERP Consultant India

I am an independent consultant and I work remotely with businesses across India. Workshops, design sessions, training and go-live support are delivered over video calls and shared project tools, scheduled within your working hours, which works well for teams spread across several states.

Most platforms with India localization can generate e-invoices with IRN and e-way bills, either built in or through a GST service provider integration. I configure and test these workflows before go-live. Applicability depends on your business, so confirm it with your chartered accountant and the vendor.

Not always. If Tally handles your accounts well and the pain is elsewhere, integrating a CRM or operations tool may be enough. If inventory, manufacturing, projects or approvals live in spreadsheets, an ERP usually helps. I map your processes first, then recommend the simplest option.

Yes. Most ERPs with India localization support multiple GSTINs through branches or companies, with stock transfers and interstate supplies handled correctly. I set up each registration, test place of supply scenarios with your chartered accountant and build consolidated reports for management.

No. I configure systems to reflect the advice of your chartered accountant and tax advisor. My role is to make sure tax codes, ledgers, TDS sections and reports are set up consistently so compliance work is based on reliable data, while tax and legal decisions stay with qualified advisors.
