ERP for a city where manual work is expensive

How does an ERP consultant help a Zurich company?

For a Zurich company, an ERP consultant defines what finance, procurement, projects and production must do in one system and how much of the routine work can be automated, then helps choose a platform and oversees delivery. Locally that covers back-office systems for financial firms, grant and prototype accounting for ETH spin-offs, traceability for medtech makers and lean billing for service firms. I work remotely.

I work remotely with businesses in Zurich and the surrounding region. The city combines banks, insurers and asset managers with fintechs, software companies, research spin-offs, medical technology makers and a large professional services sector. Across all of them, skilled people are costly, so every hour spent rekeying invoices or reconciling spreadsheets has a visible price.

That shapes how I approach a Zurich project. Alongside the usual question of which platform fits, I look hard at which routine tasks can be removed or automated, which specialist systems should stay, and how a small finance team can run a growing company without adding headcount for work a system should do.

What I Do

Focused help for Zurich's mix of firms

Zurich companies tend to know exactly what they want to stop doing by hand. These are the areas where I help them get there.

Financial Firm Back Office

Banks, insurers, brokers and asset managers keep their core platforms. I design the finance, procurement, vendor and cost allocation layer around them, with outsourcing and data points reviewed by your compliance team.

Fintech Revenue Flows

For payment, wealth and insurance technology firms, I map transaction fees, subscriptions, partner revenue shares and settlement accounts, so the ledger reconciles with what the platform actually processed.

Spin-Off Finance Setup

Research spin-offs juggle grants, investor money and early sales. I scope project accounting for funded work, cost tracking for prototypes and reporting that satisfies both funders and the board.

Medtech and Precision Production

For device and component makers, I document batch and serial traceability, controlled changes, supplier qualification and costing, then test shortlisted systems with your own products and quality steps.

Finance Automation Design

I target supplier invoice capture, approval routing, payment runs, bank matching and expense handling for automation, so a small team closes the month calmly and keeps its time for analysis.

Service Firm Billing

Consultancies, engineering offices and agencies need time capture, project budgets and invoicing that partners trust. I design that cycle so work in progress and margin are visible at any point.

Zurich's business landscape and its system needs

Zurich is the country's largest city and its main financial center. The streets around Paradeplatz and the lakeside hold banks, insurers, asset managers and law firms. Zurich West, the former industrial district, now hosts technology companies, studios and startups. Oerlikon and the area toward the airport add corporate campuses and offices, while the airport itself handles air cargo and aviation services. ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich feed a steady stream of research spin-offs, and the wider canton and neighboring regions host precision engineering and medical technology producers. Zug, a short train ride away, adds holding and trading companies.

For an ERP, the common thread is not one sector but the cost of labor. Skilled staff in Zurich are expensive, so companies feel every manual step. A process that a larger company elsewhere might accept, such as typing supplier invoices or building a monthly report by hand, is a real burden for a lean Zurich team.

Topics that apply across Switzerland, including multi-currency finance, Swiss VAT, data protection and hosting, and multilingual teams, are on my Switzerland ERP consultant page. The rest of this page covers the city's sectors and on designing systems that remove routine work.

Financial firms and fintechs: the systems around the core

Banks, insurers, asset managers and brokers run their core business on specialist platforms for accounts, policies, portfolios or trading. Those platforms are not what I replace. The ERP question in a financial firm is about everything around them: the general ledger where it is separate, accounts payable, procurement, vendor and contract management, cost allocation to business lines, and management reporting that combines core system output with operating costs.

Regulated firms also face expectations about outsourcing, data handling and controls when they move such functions to cloud software. I capture these as requirements and design approval trails, access rules and vendor oversight into the solution, while the regulatory interpretation stays with your compliance team and legal advisors.

Fintech companies sit between finance and software. A payment, wealth or insurance technology firm may earn transaction fees, subscriptions and revenue shares with partners, while holding client money in settlement accounts that must reconcile exactly. I map how money moves through the platform, the banks and the ledger, and define what the ERP must record and when. The aim is a close that does not depend on large spreadsheets reconciling platform exports by hand. My ERP solution design service covers how I turn these flows into a blueprint.

Research spin-offs and medtech producers

Spin-offs from ETH and the universities often begin with public innovation funding, private investors and a fiduciary who keeps the books. As they grow, they need more: project accounting for funded work with the reporting each funder requires, cost tracking for prototypes and pilot production, purchase approvals, and early customer billing. Moving bookkeeping in-house or onto a proper system is a big step, and the first design choices affect the company for years. I help founders choose a setup that fits the current stage and leaves room for production, new entities and investor reporting later.

Medical technology and precision component makers in the Zurich region have more demanding requirements. Customers and regulators expect full traceability of batches and serial numbers, controlled handling of design and process changes, qualified suppliers, inspection records and the ability to recall quickly. Small production runs and frequent engineering changes are common.

I document these needs alongside costing and planning, and test platforms with your own bills of materials, routings and quality steps. The regulatory reading of what your quality system requires stays with your quality and regulatory team. My manufacturing ERP framework is the base, extended for device traceability and validation where your quality team asks for it.

Automating finance work in lean teams

In many Zurich companies, the finance team is small and well paid, so I treat automation as a requirement rather than a nice extra. I start by mapping each routine: how supplier invoices arrive and are coded, who approves them, how payments are prepared, how bank statements are matched, how expenses are claimed and how the month-end checklist runs. For each step I note the time spent and the errors that occur.

From that map I mark what can be automated with standard platform features, what needs a dedicated tool such as invoice capture, and what should stay manual because the judgment matters. Payment slips with QR codes are standard in Switzerland, so I check how each candidate reads incoming slips and produces outgoing ones. Bank connectivity, approval routing on mobile devices and automatic matching rules are tested with real data during demonstrations.

Professional services firms, from consultancies to engineering offices, add time capture and project billing to that list. Automating timesheet reminders, approvals and invoice drafts can recover a surprising amount of partner time. My finance automation page sets out the method, and AI business automation covers where newer tools can help without creating new control risks.

Working remotely with Zurich teams

I work remotely with businesses in Zurich. Zurich mornings and early afternoons fall inside my working day in India, which leaves a dependable window for workshops, reviews and testing sessions. Between them I prepare documents, scripts and design notes, so each session starts from written progress and your team's time is used carefully.

The engagement runs in English, which many Zurich companies already use alongside German. Internal discussions in German or Swiss German continue as usual within your team, and German-language templates, user guides and training come from your colleagues or a partner you choose, built on my English documentation.

Where an implementation partner configures the system, I stay on your side, reviewing their proposals and deliverables against the requirements and keeping change requests visible. An on-site day in Zurich can be arranged in advance if a milestone calls for it, though the method does not rely on travel. For the French-speaking west of the country, see my Geneva ERP consultant page; the Switzerland hub gives the national picture, and you can contact me to describe what you want to stop doing by hand.

FAQ

Questions About ERP Consultant Zurich

No. Core banking, policy and portfolio systems are specialist platforms outside my scope. I work on the finance, procurement, vendor management, cost allocation and reporting layer around them, and on how data flows between that layer and your core platforms. Regulatory expectations are confirmed by your compliance team.

Usually when funded projects need detailed cost tracking, production starts, a second entity appears or investors ask for faster and richer reporting. Many spin-offs keep their fiduciary for statutory work and tax while running daily operations on their own system. I help you decide what to bring in-house and when.

That depends on your volumes, document quality and how standardized your processes are. I map each routine, measure the effort and errors involved, and identify what standard features, add-on tools or integrations can handle. Some judgment-heavy work should stay manual, and I say so plainly rather than promising full automation.

Some can, provided the platform supports batch and serial traceability, controlled changes, inspection records and audit trails, and can be validated to your quality team's satisfaction. Others are better served by an ERP with a specialist quality system connected to it. I compare both routes against your products and quality processes.
