Is Odoo Manufacturing a fit for Belgian producers?
For Belgian chocolate makers, bakeries, brewers, metal shops and machine builders, Odoo Manufacturing is often a good match when recipes or assemblies are well structured and the owners want planning, stock and cost figures together. Recording operator activity may concern the works council or union delegation. Quality, PLM and the MPS have usually needed Enterprise, which Odoo or your implementer should verify. My fit review is done remotely.

Belgian manufacturing ranges from chocolate, biscuits and beer to plastics, chemicals, metal fabrication and machine building, spread across Flanders and Wallonia. Many producers are family-owned firms that export most of their output and answer to demanding industrial or retail customers.
Odoo can put their production on the same records as sales, buying, warehousing and the ledger, covering recipes and assembly structures, machine groups, outside processing, inspections and batch tracing. How far it goes depends on whether you run discrete assembly, batch food or formula-based production.
I work remotely, independent of Odoo and its implementers. I map your production with planning, production and finance, raise the employee consultation question early, and say plainly where a specialist system fits better.
Each element is tried on a pilot product family in a test database before the full rollout.
A frank assessment of how your plant maps onto Odoo, separating discrete assembly, batch food and formula-based work, with gaps, add-ons and alternatives listed side by side.
Recipes and assembly structures with outputs, yields, by-products, phantom levels and variants, plus an approval routine for every change that both the engineering office and the plant manager sign before it reaches production.
Lines, cells and machines set up as work centers only where you need time, capacity or cost per step, with realistic capacities and hourly rates from finance.
Outside operations such as galvanizing, powder coating, heat treatment or co-packing at Belgian or French specialists, with components shipped out, finished items received back and the processor's charges posted to the right order.
A plain description of each data item operators enter on the floor, its purpose and its audience, written so HR, employee representatives and your privacy advisor can review it.
Material, labor, machine and overhead components of product cost agreed with your controller, with variance analysis that fits the monthly close and the accountant's reporting.

Belgian food producers make chocolate and pralines, biscuits and bakery goods, frozen vegetables and potato products, dairy, meat products and beer, often for retailers and export customers who audit their records. Each batch consumes ingredient lots, yields finished lots with some loss, and may generate by-products or rework. EU food law requires traceability to the immediate supplier and customer, and customer standards may add more. Your quality manager sets the rules.
Odoo stores each recipe as a structure that yields a fixed batch size. Running the batch takes the ingredients out of stock, and the team can correct both usage and yield if the kettle or oven behaved differently. Once every ingredient and every finished batch carries a lot, the system can show which cocoa or flour delivery ended up with which customer, and I walk through that query with your quality manager before launch.
Brewers and other producers of excise goods have additional duty and stock obligations, and standard Odoo is unlikely to manage those procedures fully; your advisor defines what is needed. Continuous lines, variable-weight products and strength-adjusted formulas can also push a producer toward extra modules or a dedicated process system, so the trickiest recipe is tried first. The food and beverage page gives the general view, and Odoo Inventory in Belgium covers lots in the warehouse.
Flanders and Wallonia have many metalworking firms, machine builders and suppliers to industrial customers. Their work is often made to order, with multi-level bills of materials, many variants and operations such as laser cutting, bending, welding and assembly, while galvanizing, powder coating or heat treatment are sent to specialists.
For these firms Odoo offers layered structures where some sub-assemblies are stocked and others pass straight through, attribute-driven variants, and order-driven replenishment where one customer order spawns the purchases and internal production it needs. Operations tied to a machine group capture minutes and load where they matter, such as the press brake or laser that sets the pace of the whole shop.
For outside finishing, a special structure type ships the raw parts to the galvanizer or coater and books the treated parts back in, with the processor's fee added to the order cost. I test the awkward cases with your purchasing team, including partial returns, rejected parts and a supplier invoice that differs from the order. Engineering changes need a routine too. Odoo PLM, generally an Enterprise app, provides change orders and BoM versions; without it, a documented approval process works for smaller teams. If drawings live in a CAD or PDM system, the design names who owns the link. See the Odoo Manufacturing page and the manufacturing industry page.
On tablets or terminals beside the line, Odoo's operator screens are used to clock jobs on and off, book material use and enter inspection results. Which version of that interface is available depends on edition and release, so I check before hardware is purchased. The data improves cost accuracy and planning, but it also records what individual employees do and when.
Larger Belgian employers have a works council, and many firms have a union delegation as well. National collective agreements address topics such as camera surveillance and the monitoring of electronic communications at work, and introducing new technology with consequences for staff can trigger information and consultation duties. GDPR applies to the personal data recorded. Which of these apply to your plant, and what process is required, is for your HR department and legal advisor to determine, not for me.
What I bring is a short floor data note listing each recorded item, the reason for it, the people with access, the retention rule and the reports built on it. Often the design can record work center time and output without ranking individuals. Sharing that note early avoids a rollout that stops when terminals are already installed. Language matters here as well: operator screens and work instructions in French or Dutch, prepared by your staff. My business process consultant in Belgium page covers the change side.
Belgian controllers usually want product cost they can defend: material at the right value, labor and machine time at realistic rates, overhead applied consistently and variances explained. Odoo builds product cost from the BoM components and from time at each work center at an hourly rate that can include overhead. I agree with your controller which elements belong in cost, how rates are set and reviewed, and how manufacturing entries flow into Odoo Accounting in Belgium. Labor rates often draw on payroll figures from your social secretariat, so I define who updates them and when.
Planning in Odoo runs on reordering rules and make-to-order routes, with a Master Production Schedule for forecast-driven planning that has generally been an Enterprise tool. For a biscuit maker with steady demand, a few well-maintained rules can be enough; for a machine builder, make-to-order chains and lead times matter more. I test planning with real orders before go-live.
Quality control points, maintenance planning, PLM and parts of the operator interface have also generally required Enterprise, and Odoo Online does not accept custom modules. Each requirement goes into a feature table, answered by Odoo or the implementer for your release, so competing quotes rest on the same assumptions.
Odoo is a credible option for many Belgian small and mid-sized producers, but not for all. Pharmaceutical, biotech and fine chemical companies working under good manufacturing practice generally need validated systems, electronic batch records and quality release processes that standard Odoo does not provide. Large chemical and petrochemical sites in the Antwerp area run process industries with requirements well beyond a general ERP.
High-volume food plants running around the clock often require manufacturing execution or process software that Odoo cannot stand in for. A plant where the real constraint is sequencing jobs over a few bottleneck machines may want a dedicated scheduling product next to Odoo. And a Belgian plant of an international group usually has to follow the group ERP, where a local Odoo instance adds interfaces rather than value.
Family food businesses, jobbing shops, machine builders and component makers whose products are well defined can usually run planning, buying, stock, inspection and costing in Odoo without much bespoke code. The fit review comes before any quote is requested, so every implementer prices identical scope. If the conclusion favors another platform, the ERPNext and Odoo manufacturing comparison, the best ERP for manufacturing overview and my ERP consultant in Belgium page describe how I approach that choice.

Yes. When ingredients and finished batches both carry lots, Odoo connects every batch made to the supplier lots it used, so you can trace forward to customers and back to deliveries. Your quality manager and I test that before launch. Duty procedures for beer or spirits are a separate topic for your advisor.
Possibly. Belgian rules on information and consultation, collective agreements on monitoring and GDPR may all be relevant when you record operator activity. Your HR department and legal advisor determine what applies. I provide a floor data note describing what is captured and why, to support that discussion.
Yes. The subcontract structure ships raw parts to the finisher, books treated parts back into stock and charges the finishing fee to the order. With your buyers I try split returns, rejected pieces and a finisher's invoice that does not match the order.
Inspection control points, PLM, the production schedule tool, preventive maintenance planning and some operator screens have mostly been Enterprise items in past releases. Since Odoo reshuffles editions over time, I ask Odoo or your implementer to put the current answer for your version in writing before the plan relies on it.
Usually only partly. Regulated pharmaceutical and fine chemical production needs validated systems, batch records and quality release beyond standard Odoo. Some companies use Odoo for finance, purchasing or distribution and a specialist system for production. I help define that boundary.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
