ERP for a Pacific trading and resource city

What can an ERP consultant do for a Vancouver business?

For Vancouver companies, an ERP consultant designs how import and export shipments, multi-currency purchasing, resource projects or production budgets run in one system, then guides selection and delivery. Typical needs here include landed cost on goods from Asia, Canadian and US entities in one group, and cost records that support tax credit claims. I work remotely from India, with on-site sessions only by arrangement.

I work remotely with businesses in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland: importers and wholesalers bringing goods across the Pacific, exporters of wood, food and other products, head offices of forestry and mining companies, and studios in film, television, visual effects and games. Sessions in person are possible by arrangement. Most share a need for clearer costs on goods, projects or productions that cross borders.

Vancouver businesses often face west and south at the same time: suppliers and customers across Asia, and significant sales into the United States. That brings several currencies, customs on both sides of a border and frequently a US subsidiary. I work out how the group and its trade flows should be structured in the ERP before any product is chosen.

What I Do

ERP support for cross-border businesses

Trade with Asia, sales into the US, resource projects and screen production all put specific demands on an ERP. Here is where I usually help.

Import Landed Cost

For importers sourcing from Asia, I design purchase orders by container, shipment tracking and allocation of freight, duty, brokerage and terminal charges, so every product carries its true cost before it is priced.

Export and Cross-Border Sales

Exporters selling into the US and overseas need customer pricing in several currencies, export documents and carrier bookings. I map these processes so orders, shipping papers and invoices all come from one record.

Canadian and US Entities

Many Vancouver companies run a US sales or warehousing entity. I design entity setup, intercompany sales, the transfer pricing inputs your advisors specify and consolidation, so group results no longer depend on a spreadsheet.

Forestry and Wood Products

Sawmills, wood product makers and forestry contractors deal with volume measurement, grades, by-products and equipment-heavy operations. I define how production, inventory by grade and maintenance costs are recorded and reported.

Resource Project Accounting

Mining and exploration companies need costs captured by property, program and phase, with approvals for field spending. I define that cost structure and how the ERP relates to geological and field data tools.

Film, VFX and Game Studios

Production companies and studios track budgets by show or title, crew time, vendor costs and spending that may qualify for tax credits. I design cost coding so claims and producer reports draw on the same data.

Vancouver's economy and its ERP priorities

Vancouver's role as a major gateway for trade between Canada and Asia shapes much of its business community. The port handles containers, bulk commodities and vehicles moving to and from Asian markets, and warehouses across the Lower Mainland, from Delta and Richmond out to the Fraser Valley, hold goods on their way to the rest of Canada and the US. British Columbia's resource sectors, including forestry, mining and energy, keep many head offices and service firms in the city even when operations are in the interior or overseas. A large film, television and visual effects industry, and a technology sector spanning software, games and clean tech, add very different needs.

Three questions come up again and again. How do we know the true cost of goods that crossed an ocean? How do we keep Canadian and US operations in step? And how do we track spending by project or production precisely enough for investors, partners and tax credit claims? I answer these with you before a platform is picked.

GST and PST setup and other national topics are explained on my Canada ERP consultant page, leaving room here for what is distinctive about Vancouver.

Importers and exporters on the Pacific route

A Vancouver importer may buy from manufacturers in China, Vietnam, Korea or Japan, pay in US dollars and sell in Canadian dollars to retailers across the country. Goods spend weeks at sea, sometimes wait at the terminal, and then move onward by truck or rail. Costs arrive separately and late: the supplier invoice, ocean freight, brokerage, duty, terminal and drayage charges. If the ERP cannot attach these to the right shipment and products, margins are wrong and pricing decisions suffer.

I design purchasing around shipments and containers, with expected dates that update as vessels move, and landed cost allocation rules agreed with your controller. Currency exposure is tracked from order to payment. Exporters, including food and wood product sellers, need the reverse: export documentation, certificates where products require them, and pricing in buyers' currencies.

I base these requirements on my trading ERP approach and plan connections with forwarders, customs brokers and carriers through ERP integration work. Many importers also hold stock at a third-party warehouse, so receipts and stock reports from that provider must flow back without manual entry.

Resource companies and the forestry value chain

Forestry in British Columbia runs from harvesting and hauling contractors to sawmills, pulp and panel producers and specialty wood product manufacturers. Their systems must handle volumes measured in the forest and at the mill, product grades and dimensions, by-products such as chips and sawdust that carry their own value, and heavy equipment whose maintenance is a large share of operating cost. I define how production, grade-based inventory and equipment costs are captured, drawing on my manufacturing ERP page.

Mining and exploration companies headquartered in Vancouver have a different profile. Many run a lean head office while field programs happen elsewhere in the province, in other parts of Canada or abroad. They need spending captured by property, program and phase, approvals for field purchases, multiple currencies, and reporting that supports disclosure to investors and joint venture partners.

For these companies the ERP is usually a finance and procurement backbone, with geological and drilling data kept in specialist tools. I help decide what the ERP must hold, how project costs are structured, and how field teams submit costs and receipts without slowing the work.

Studios, tech firms and cross-border groups

Vancouver's film and television productions, visual effects houses and game studios are project businesses with unusual rules. Each show or title has its own budget, crew and vendors, and often its own legal entity. Producers want cost reports against budget throughout production, and provincial and federal tax credit claims depend on labor and spending being coded correctly from the start. I design cost codes, approval flows and the link between payroll services, production accounting tools and the company ledger.

Software and clean tech companies face familiar scale-up problems with a local twist: many sell mainly into the US and set up a US entity early. That brings two currencies, intercompany charges and consolidated reporting for investors. Research tax credit claims also rely on dependable records of who worked on what.

For any group with Canadian and US entities, I settle the entity structure, intercompany flows and consolidation rules first, then judge platforms on how cleanly they handle them. Transfer pricing and tax treatment are decisions for your accountants; my role is making sure the system can carry out what they decide, consistently, every month.

Working across the Pacific: Vancouver and India hours

Pacific time and Indian time sit on almost opposite sides of the clock, so our shared window is narrower than it would be with eastern Canada. We have two options and usually use both: the first part of your morning, which is my late evening, and the end of your afternoon, which is my early morning. Workshops and demos go in the morning slot; quick decisions and check-ins use the other.

Because live time is precious, I prepare thoroughly. Agendas and draft documents go out before each session, decisions are written up straight after, and open questions sit in a shared log your team can update during the day. Recorded walk-throughs from your warehouse, mill or production office can often replace a live meeting entirely.

Go-live and the first month-end get extended coverage, with my hours moved to match yours. On-site sessions in Vancouver can be planned ahead by arrangement. For other Canadian work, visit the Canada hub, or write to me with a few lines on your trade flows and systems.

FAQ

Questions About ERP Consultant Vancouver

No. I work with Vancouver companies remotely from India, as an independent advisor. We use a morning and a late-afternoon window for live sessions and shared documents for everything else. If an on-site workshop would genuinely help, it can be arranged in advance, but the engagement is built to work without travel.

It can, provided the design accounts for it from the start. I define how freight, duty, brokerage and terminal charges are captured per shipment, how they are allocated to products, and how late-arriving invoices adjust costs. I then test each shortlisted platform with one of your real container shipments.

Usually, yes. Most mid-market platforms support several entities and currencies, but they differ in how they handle intercompany transactions, sales tax on each side of the border and consolidation. I compare those details against your structure before you choose.

Yes, on finance and procurement: cost capture by property and program, field purchasing approvals, multiple currencies and investor reporting. Geological, drilling and assay data stay in specialist tools, and I define what, if anything, the ERP needs from them.

It can make them much easier by coding labor and spending correctly from the start of a production. I design the cost structure and approvals so claim schedules come from system data. Eligibility and claim preparation remain with your production accountant and tax advisors.
