What does an ERPNext consultant do for an Indian business?
An ERPNext consultant in India checks whether ERPNext and its India compliance tooling cover your GST returns, IRN generation, e-way bills and withholding needs, then plans the move off Tally or spreadsheets. I map your processes first, design companies, GSTINs and warehouses, configure Frappe HR where it fits, and work alongside the implementer or developer you choose as your independent advisor.

ERPNext has deep roots in India. Frappe, the company behind it, is India-based, and a large share of the ERPNext community, implementers and add-on developers work here. That makes it a natural shortlist candidate for manufacturers, distributors and traders who have outgrown Tally and want an open-source system they control.
A strong ecosystem does not remove the hard questions. GST, e-invoicing, e-way bills, TDS and multi-state branches all need careful design, and much of the statutory functionality now sits in a separate India compliance app rather than core ERPNext. I help you check that stack against your obligations before anyone starts configuring.
I work remotely with businesses across India, in Indian working hours, as an independent ERPNext consultant. I can act as your business analyst and project lead while a development firm or in-house team handles the build, or guide a smaller implementation directly.
These are the areas where Indian ERPNext projects most often need an independent view, from compliance design to the exit from Tally.
I check the India compliance app, your GST Suvidha Provider route and ERPNext core features against your actual obligations, including e-invoicing, e-way bills, reverse charge and returns reconciliation, before scope is fixed.
Mapping Tally groups, ledgers, stock items and godowns into an ERPNext chart of accounts, item master and warehouse tree, and deciding how much voucher history is worth bringing across.
Structuring companies, addresses, naming series and warehouses so each GSTIN issues its own documents, branch transfers across states carry the right tax treatment, and returns can be prepared per registration.
Reviewing bills of materials, job work with subcontractors, batch tracking and quality inspection against how your plants really run, using ERPNext manufacturing rather than parallel spreadsheets.
Salary structures, PF, ESI, professional tax and gratuity components configured with your payroll advisor, plus attendance and leave, with a clear decision on what stays in a specialist payroll product.
Writing the requirement document, reviewing proposals from ERPNext implementers and keeping their work tied to your fit-gap list, so every customization is justified, documented and safe to carry through future upgrades.
Planning connections to marketplaces, payment gateways, bank payment files and dealer or distributor systems, with clear ownership of each data flow and reconciliation to the ledger.
Reviewing an existing ERPNext site that has drifted: unmanaged customizations, broken GST reports, stock valuation issues or a stalled upgrade, with a prioritized plan to stabilize it.

In current ERPNext releases, most India-specific statutory features are delivered through a separate India compliance app built on the Frappe framework, while core ERPNext keeps general features such as tax templates and tax withholding categories. Before you commit, it is worth knowing which layer handles what, and who maintains it.
I review the stack against your real transactions, not a feature list. Typical checks include:
Each check becomes a test scenario that your accounts team signs off during UAT. Rules change, so I always ask you to confirm current requirements with your chartered accountant, and I keep the compliance app updated as part of the upgrade routine rather than as an afterthought. The broader picture of Indian ERP compliance is on my ERP consultant in India page.
Most Indian ERPNext projects I see start from Tally, usually surrounded by spreadsheets for stock, production, approvals and sales follow-up. Tally keeps the books well; the pain comes from everything that happens outside it.
A clean migration starts with structure, not data. Tally groups and ledgers need to be mapped to an ERPNext chart of accounts that also supports cost centers and accounting dimensions. Sundry debtors and creditors become customers and suppliers with GSTINs, addresses and payment terms. Stock items, units and godowns become items, UOM conversions and warehouses, often with batch or serial tracking that Tally never held.
Then come the choices:
I prepare import templates for ERPNext's data import tool, run trial loads, and reconcile trial balance, receivables, payables and stock value against Tally with your accountant after each pass. My ERP data migration service and migration checklist describe the method in more detail.
Indian businesses rarely run from one location. A head office, two plants, a few depots and a dealer network across several states is a common shape, and ERPNext can model it well if the structure is decided early.
The first question is whether each state registration belongs in a separate ERPNext company or in one company with several GSTIN addresses. The answer depends on legal entities, how management wants to see profit, and how accounts are closed. I set out the options with your accountant before configuration starts.
Next is document flow. Each GSTIN needs its own naming series. Stock moving between branches in different states is a taxable supply, so it needs an invoice and e-way bill rather than a plain stock transfer. Job work with subcontractors needs its own flow so material sent out is tracked and returned.
For manufacturers, I look at ERPNext manufacturing for bills of materials, work orders, batch control and quality inspection. Distributors usually care more about pricing rules, schemes, credit limits and dealer outstanding. I rarely recommend a big-bang launch across all sites: a pilot location, a stabilization period and a planned sequence for the rest is safer. Industry context is covered under manufacturing and distribution.
India has more ERPNext implementers and Frappe developers than any other market I work in, from individual developers to established firms. That is good for choice and cost, but quality varies widely, and many proposals jump straight to customization without a documented understanding of your processes.
As an independent consultant, I represent the business, not the build team. I do not resell hosting or development, so my role is to make sure the implementer builds the right thing. In practice that means:
Hosting is part of the same discussion. Frappe Cloud removes server management, while self-hosting on an Indian data center or cloud region gives you direct control over where data sits. Check the regions currently on offer, and how either option fits India's data protection requirements, with your advisor. Read ERP vendor selection for how I structure the comparison.
ERPNext is often a good choice in India, but not always. I say so early when I see these situations:
Where several of these apply, I put ERPNext and its rivals through one scoring sheet built from your requirements. My Zoho vs ERPNext and Odoo vs ERPNext comparisons show the trade-offs, and the main ERPNext consulting page explains the platform itself. More on how I work with Indian companies is on the India hub.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

E-invoicing, e-way bills and most GST-specific features are provided through a separate India compliance app in the Frappe ecosystem, usually connected through a GST Suvidha Provider. I test the full cycle, including IRN generation, QR codes, cancellations and credit notes, against your transactions, and ask you to confirm current rules with your chartered accountant.
Yes. I map Tally groups, ledgers, items and godowns to an ERPNext chart of accounts, item master and warehouses, prepare import templates and run trial loads. After each load we reconcile trial balance, receivables, payables and stock value with your accountant, and agree how much voucher history is worth migrating.
Both models work. For smaller scopes I can guide configuration directly. For larger projects with custom apps, I usually act as your independent business analyst and project lead while an ERPNext implementer or in-house developer handles the build. I am not a Frappe partner and do not resell hosting or development.
Frappe HR supports salary structures, components such as PF, ESI and professional tax, attendance, leave and gratuity, and many Indian businesses run payroll on it. Whether it suits you depends on headcount, states, contract labor and statutory filings. I review those with your payroll advisor before deciding.
Frappe Cloud suits teams that want updates, backups and servers handled for them. Self-hosting in an Indian data center or cloud region gives more control and keeps data where you choose, but your team owns security and upgrades. I compare both against your IT capacity and data protection obligations.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
