ERP for Pune's auto and engineering suppliers

How can an ERP consultant help a Pune manufacturer?

For Pune auto component suppliers and engineering firms, an ERP consultant designs planning around frequently revised OEM schedules, job work sent out for heat treatment or plating, die and tool life, rejection and rework analysis and engineering change control. I also advise local software services companies and colleges, whose fee and billing needs differ. Workshops are held remotely, with plant visits only by arrangement.

I work remotely with businesses in Pune, where the industrial belts of Chakan, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Talegaon and Ranjangaon host vehicle makers and a deep chain of component suppliers: forging, casting, machining, sheet metal, plastics, rubber and assembly. Alongside them sit engineering firms that build special machines, tooling and process equipment.

For a supplier, the customer's schedule sets the pace of the whole business, and quality failures are expensive. I help Pune manufacturers design an ERP that plans to customer schedules, tracks parts through outside processing and keeps quality records close to the transaction. I also work with the city's IT services firms and education institutes, whose needs are quite different.

What I Do

ERP design for plants that supply OEMs

Most Pune engagements start with one question: does the system plan and track production the way your biggest customer orders and audits it?

Schedule-Driven Planning

I design how monthly schedules and frequent revisions from vehicle makers and tier one customers become production and purchase plans, so the shop floor reacts to changes without a planner rebuilding everything in a spreadsheet.

Outside Processing Control

Parts often leave for heat treatment, plating, painting or machining at vendors and come back changed. I design challans, vendor-wise stock, process loss and returns so you always know which part is at which vendor.

Tooling and Die Management

I set up registers for dies, molds, fixtures and gauges, including customer-owned tooling, with shot or stroke counts, maintenance history and calibration due dates linked to the parts they produce.

Quality Close to Production

I make sure inspection results, rejections, rework and customer complaints are recorded against batches and part numbers, so cost of poor quality and supplier performance can be reported rather than estimated.

Engineering Change Handling

When a drawing or part revision changes, old stock, open orders and tooling are all affected. I design revision-controlled items and change approval steps so the right version is built and shipped.

Institutes and Service Firms

For education institutes and IT services companies, I assess whether an ERP, a specialist campus or project tool, or both linked together should handle admissions, fees, projects and billing.

Pune's industrial base and its ERP demands

Pune and its surrounding industrial areas form a major automotive and engineering cluster. Passenger car, commercial vehicle, two-wheeler and construction equipment makers have plants in the region, and they pull in a large network of component suppliers, many of them owner-managed firms that grew from a single machine shop. Beyond automotive, Pune has makers of compressors, pumps, valves, electrical equipment and special purpose machines.

Supplying an OEM changes how a company has to run. Customers issue delivery schedules that change often, expect parts to arrive in specific packaging with labels and documents, audit the supplier's quality system, and penalize late or defective deliveries. Many suppliers manage these demands with experienced planners and spreadsheets, which works until volumes, part numbers or customers grow.

An ERP for such a business is really a planning and traceability system with accounting attached. I start by tracing a few representative parts from customer schedule to dispatch, then turn what I find into requirements. My automotive industry page outlines the general model, while the GST, e-invoicing and e-way bill aspects that apply across India are on my India ERP consultant page.

Planning to OEM schedules and handling outside processing

A typical component supplier receives a monthly schedule from each customer, followed by revisions and daily call-offs. The system must convert that into production plans for forging, machining or assembly, raise purchase requirements for steel, castings or bought-out parts, and highlight shortages early.

Outside processing complicates it. A machined part may go out for heat treatment, return for finishing, then leave again for plating. Each trip needs a delivery challan, the part's status changes, and some quantity is lost or rejected along the way. Under GST, goods sent for job work have their own documentation and time limits for return, which your chartered accountant will advise on. In the ERP, I look for:

  • Routings that include external operations, with the vendor and expected lead time
  • Stock visible by vendor location, so nothing disappears between dispatch and return
  • Process loss and rejection recorded on return, against the vendor
  • Vendor charges matched to the quantity actually processed
  • Alerts for material that has stayed out too long

These scenarios go into the scripted demos I run during ERP vendor selection, because platforms vary a lot in how naturally they handle them.

Tooling, quality and engineering changes

Dies, molds and fixtures are among a component maker's most valuable assets, and some of them belong to the customer. Each has a life measured in strokes or shots, needs periodic maintenance, and must be available when the schedule calls for its part. Gauges and measuring instruments need calibration on a fixed cycle. When this is tracked outside the ERP, a worn die or an overdue gauge shows up only as a quality problem.

Quality records are just as important. OEM customers expect rejection data by part, defect and cause, rework tracked separately from scrap, and customer complaints linked to the batch shipped. A system that records these at the point of production lets the plant report cost of poor quality and supplier performance without manual compilation. More detailed quality documentation for audits often lives in a dedicated quality tool, and I define what passes between it and the ERP.

Engineering changes tie it together. When a part revision changes, existing stock, open purchase orders, work in progress and tooling are all affected. I design revision-controlled item masters and a simple change approval flow so the right revision is built and shipped. My engineering page covers project-based machine builders, who face these issues in a different form.

IT services companies and education institutes

Pune also has a large IT services community, centered on areas such as Hinjewadi and Kharadi, ranging from small development shops to delivery centers of larger firms. For the smaller and mid-sized firms that choose their own systems, I help decide how projects, timesheets, resource allocation and client billing should be split between an ERP, a project or PSA tool and the CRM.

The city's long tradition as an education center brings another group: colleges, schools, coaching and training institutes. Their core processes are admissions, fee structures with installments and concessions, scholarships, student records, timetables and exams. Specialist campus management systems often handle the academic side better, while the ERP or accounting system handles fees, payroll, purchasing and statutory accounts. The design question is how the two systems share student and fee data so that receipts reconcile. My education industry page sets out that split.

In both cases I keep the same principle: understand the process first, then choose the smallest set of systems that runs it cleanly, linked by integrations that someone on your side can understand and maintain.

Working with Pune teams remotely

As an India-based consultant, I work in the same time zone as your plant and office, so sessions can be timed around shifts, production meetings and month-end. Planners, stores and quality staff usually prefer short focused calls, and I keep them that way.

Engagements run online. I ask for sample customer schedules, routing sheets, job work challans, rejection reports and tool registers, which reveal more about real practice than general interviews. Then I return process maps, a requirement document with numbered items, a fit-gap view of shortlisted platforms and a decision log. During implementation I review the partner's configuration against the design and run test cases on real parts with your team.

A plant visit can be planned by arrangement when seeing the shop floor in person would genuinely help, though no phase of the project relies on one. For my wider work across the country, visit the India overview, or contact me to talk about your plant.

FAQ

Questions About ERP Consultant Pune

Yes, if planning is designed around them. The system should accept schedule updates, show the change against the previous version and replan production and purchasing without a full manual rebuild. I test this with one of your real customer schedules during evaluation, because platforms differ in how cleanly they manage revisions.

Through routings with external operations, delivery challans that move stock to a vendor location, and receipts that record good, rejected and lost quantities. That keeps vendor-wise stock accurate and links vendor bills to processed quantity. Your chartered accountant advises on the GST documentation for job work.

Often both. Campus systems handle admissions, academics, timetables and exams well, while an ERP or accounting system handles fees, payroll, purchasing and statutory accounts. The key is a reliable link for student and fee data. I compare options against your processes before you commit.

I work remotely with businesses in Pune, and being India-based means we keep the same office hours. Workshops run over video, backed by shared documents and sample records from your plant. If walking the shop floor together would genuinely help at some milestone, we can plan a visit by arrangement; nothing in the project waits on it.
