Why would an Omani business hire a Zoho consultant?
In Oman, an independent Zoho consultant configures Zoho Books, Inventory, CRM and neighboring apps around Omani VAT, rial amounts carried to the baisa, the e-invoicing framework now being introduced, and companies split across Muscat, free zones and industrial estates. I design those rules first, test bilingual documents and bank files, then guide the rollout.

Omani businesses that choose Zoho are often importers, distributors, contractors and service companies that have outgrown a desktop accounting package and a shared spreadsheet of stock. Zoho gives them CRM, invoicing and inventory under one login. I help them remotely, from deciding which apps to license to checking the setup before the first VAT return is prepared.
Oman adds its own tests. Every amount must respect the baisa, the third decimal place. Tax invoices need Arabic for many buyers. Goods move through Sohar, Salalah and Duqm, sometimes into free zones with their own treatment. And the Oman Tax Authority is bringing in e-invoicing, which will reward clean data and expose shortcuts.
Each piece of work is sized to your entities, product range and tax position.
Tax codes for standard, zero-rated and exempt supplies, reverse charge on imported services, VAT numbers on every customer and supplier, and a return report reconciled to the ledger with your advisor before you file from Zoho.
Invoice lines, VAT rounding, price lists, payment allocation, bank exports and printed PDFs tested at three decimals, including any Zoho Creator app or connector that touches money.
A review of master data, item descriptions, credit note practice and invoices raised outside Zoho, measured against the Oman Tax Authority framework as published, with open questions logged for Zoho and your advisor.
Purchase orders in foreign currency inside Zoho Inventory, with, freight and customs charges spread into landed cost, stock across Muscat and port-side warehouses, and batch or expiry tracking where your products need it.
Companies in free zones, industrial estates and the mainland each given a distinct Zoho Books organization, with agreed intercompany rules and a group view that owners can read without exporting to spreadsheets.
Zoho People holding leave, attendance and staff files, including the nationality data used in workforce reporting, connected to a payroll tool that handles social insurance contributions and your bank's salary file.

First VAT period on Zoho
Zoho Books is used by many Omani SMEs to record VAT and prepare return figures. Check which edition is offered for Oman-based organizations and what its VAT reports currently contain, then confirm the treatment of your supplies with your advisor. My role is to make the configuration match that advice and to prove it with test transactions.
The rial's three decimal places deserve their own test plan. Zoho treats currency precision, unit price precision and quantity precision as separate settings, and problems usually appear where they meet:
Before go-live I push a set of awkward invoices, credit notes and partial payments through every path and compare the results with a manual calculation. Imports need the same care: goods cleared at the border and services bought from abroad must carry the right reverse charge code, and customs records should tie to purchase bills so the return can be supported if the authority asks.
The Oman Tax Authority is introducing an electronic invoicing framework. Scope, phasing and technical standards are set by the authority and may be refined, so I treat its published guidance as the source and keep my own advice to what a business can control today.
That is mostly data. A readiness review on a Zoho account usually turns up:
Fixing these now costs little and makes any connector easier to test. Alongside the cleanup, I prepare questions for Zoho and any implementing firm: how the Oman edition will connect, whether an intermediary provider is involved, what the business must configure itself and how rejected invoices will be handled. The answers go into a short decision log so nothing depends on memory.
Omani groups are often spread across different legal settings: a trading company in Muscat, a manufacturing or warehousing unit on an industrial estate, and sometimes an entity in the Sohar, Salalah or Duqm free zones serving re-export or port-linked work. Free zone activity can carry different customs and tax treatment, which your advisor should confirm for each entity.
In Zoho, I normally give each company its own Zoho Books organization so registrations, banks, numbering and audit trails stay distinct. Stock moving between a free zone warehouse and a mainland company is recorded as a sale on one side and a purchase on the other, with naming rules and a monthly matching report so balances agree.
Arabic matters for tax invoices, delivery notes and documents sent to ministries or large state-linked buyers. Check what Arabic and bilingual template support your Zoho apps offer today, then test the printed result: right-to-left alignment, mixed Arabic and English item names, and rial amounts with all three decimals visible. I also recommend agreeing a naming standard for Arabic customer names early, because that is where duplicates multiply. For an owner's view across entities, Zoho Analytics can combine the organizations into one set of dashboards.
Some Omani buyers, particularly in government-linked and regulated sectors, ask where data is held. Verify which Zoho data-center regions are open to an account created in Oman and whether any of your contracts require in-country hosting. Settle this at sign-up rather than after a year of live data.
For payroll, ask whether Zoho sells its payroll product to Omani organizations today, and if so, whether it covers social insurance contributions and your bank's salary file. Failing that, Zoho People feeds attendance into a separate Omani payroll package, and summarized journals come back into Zoho Books. Workforce nationalization targets also mean HR needs reliable records of nationality, role and contract type, which is worth designing into Zoho People from the start.
Zoho is implemented in Oman by a mix of Muscat firms and teams working from the UAE or from India. Proposals range from careful to thin. My role is to represent the buyer: writing requirements, reviewing scope and test plans, and confirming that VAT, baisa handling and Arabic documents are actually tested before sign-off. Remote working arrangements are covered in the Oman overview and on my Oman ERP consultant page.
Zoho is a sensible choice for many Omani traders and service firms, but not for all of them. These are the cases I examine before recommending it:
My ERP evaluation service runs these scenarios against your own data. Traders weighing their options can also read my trading ERP notes for Oman, which go from landed cost to credit control.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

Zoho supports currencies with three decimals, but the result depends on how currency, unit price and rounding settings interact, and on every connected app respecting them. I test invoices, VAT, payments, bank files and printed documents at three decimals before go-live, so small differences do not build up over time.
Ask Zoho directly how its Oman edition will connect to the framework, and follow guidance published by the Oman Tax Authority. Regardless of timing, you can clean VAT numbers, item data and credit note practice now. I run that review and keep a log of open questions for Zoho and your advisor.
In most cases. Each is created as a distinct Zoho Books organization holding its own registration details, bank accounts and invoice series, and the two can still share a CRM and dashboards. Your advisor confirms the tax and customs treatment of transactions between them, and I set up matching rules so intercompany balances agree each month.
Common sources are desktop accounting packages, Tally, older regional accounting software and spreadsheets for stock and customers. I map balances, open invoices, stock by location and customer records, clean duplicates across Arabic and English names, and reconcile the migrated figures with your accountant before the old system is retired.
Yes. I represent the business, not Zoho or the implementer. I write the requirements, review the proposal and configuration, check that VAT and baisa handling are tested properly and lead user acceptance testing. The implementer builds; I make sure the build fits how your company actually operates.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
