ERPNext

Open-source ERP for shop floors and tech teams

Where does ERPNext fit for Bengaluru businesses?

ERPNext suits Bengaluru companies that want an open-source system they can host and extend themselves: precision machine shops in Peenya and the southern industrial areas, manufacturers with plants on both sides of the Hosur border, and engineering-led startups with their own developers. An independent ERPNext consultant designs job work, two-state operations and hosting, and sets rules for Frappe customization. I work remotely and independently.

Bengaluru's industrial side is easy to overlook behind its tech reputation. Peenya in the north-west, and the Bommasandra and Jigani areas to the south, hold many small and mid-sized machine shops, fabricators, toolmakers and component suppliers, while larger plants sit just across the state border around Hosur. Many still run on accounting software and spreadsheets and want a real ERP without a heavy license bill.

At the same time, the city's engineering-led startups like ERPNext because it is open source and built on the Frappe Framework, which their developers can read and extend. I work remotely as an independent ERPNext consultant for both groups, designing the processes, the hosting model and the boundaries for custom code before anything is built.

What I Do

ERPNext services for Bengaluru manufacturers and builders

These services reflect the two groups in Bengaluru that most often consider ERPNext: small industrial firms and engineering-led companies.

Machine Shop Setup

For precision machining and fabrication units, I design routings, workstations, operation costing, tool and fixture tracking, and quotations built from routing times, so estimates and actual job costs can be compared.

Job Work Flows

Bengaluru shops send parts out for plating, heat treatment, coating or machining. I design subcontracting in ERPNext so material sent out, processed and returned is tracked, with challans and documentation your accountant confirms.

Two-State Operations

For companies with a Bengaluru unit and a plant near Hosur, I plan companies, branches, warehouses and inter-state transfers so stock and GST registrations stay separate but reporting stays unified.

Hosting and Operations

I compare Frappe Cloud, a managed host and self-hosting on your own cloud account, covering backups, upgrades, monitoring and who is on call when something fails during month-end.

Customization Boundaries

For teams with developers, I set rules for custom apps on the Frappe Framework: what stays in configuration, how custom doctypes and scripts are documented, and how upgrades are tested.

Implementer Selection

I prepare a scope document, compare ERPNext implementers and freelancers on the same requirements, and review their design choices at agreed checkpoints, acting for you rather than for any vendor.

Machine shops and component makers in Peenya and the southern industrial areas

Peenya is one of the larger industrial areas in the region, and together with the Bommasandra and Jigani belts it houses a dense network of small manufacturers. Many are suppliers to larger automotive, aerospace, machine tool and electrical equipment companies. Their work is job-based: a customer sends a drawing, the shop quotes, buys or receives material, machines or fabricates the part over several operations, inspects it and ships it with documentation.

ERPNext suits this pattern reasonably well when it is set up around jobs rather than generic stock. I design item masters that handle customer drawings and revisions, routings with operations and workstations, and operation-level time capture that feeds actual job cost. Quotations can be built from estimated times and material, so the owner can compare what was quoted with what the job actually took.

Inspection records, batch or heat numbers for raw material, and dispatch documents are set up to match what your customers ask for. I keep the design as close to standard ERPNext as possible, because small firms rarely have the budget to maintain heavy customization. The ERPNext manufacturing page explains the module in detail, and country topics such as GST and Tally migration are on the India ERPNext consultant page.

Job work with plating, heat treatment and coating vendors

Very few Bengaluru machine shops do every process themselves. Parts leave the premises for plating, anodizing, heat treatment, powder coating or specialized machining, then return for final inspection. Each round trip carries risk: material is lost or mixed up, returned quantities do not match what was sent, and the shop does not know what is sitting at which vendor.

In ERPNext, I design these flows using its subcontracting features, so material sent to a vendor stays visible as stock at that vendor until the processed parts return. Each outward movement produces the right document, and each return records accepted and rejected quantities. Vendor charges post to the job cost, so the price of outsourced processes is not lost in general expenses.

GST rules apply to goods sent for job work, including documentation and time limits for return. The compliance side is decided by your chartered accountant; my role is to make sure the system captures what they need and that stores staff can follow the process without workarounds. I test the full round trip with a real batch before go-live. The engineering ERP page describes related processes.

Plants on both sides of the Hosur border

A notable feature of the Bengaluru region is how industry spills across the state line into Tamil Nadu. Companies headquartered in Bengaluru often run a plant or warehouse near Hosur, and some suppliers serve automotive and electronics customers in both states. That creates two GST registrations, inter-state stock transfers, separate state-level labor and tax administration, and management who want one combined view.

In ERPNext, I model this with a clear structure: one or more companies depending on the legal setup, branches or addresses tied to each GSTIN, warehouses per site, and documented rules for inter-unit transfers. I design how transfers are priced and documented, how each site's stock and costs are reported separately, and how a consolidated view is produced for the owners.

The tax treatment of transfers between registrations is a matter for your chartered accountant, and I make sure the system follows their guidance rather than inventing an approach. Employees, payroll and statutory registrations in each state are planned with your HR and payroll advisors. The multi-company ERP page covers the general design questions.

Self-hosting and customization for engineering-led companies

Engineering-led startups in Bengaluru often prefer to host ERPNext themselves, on the same cloud account as their product, perhaps in an Indian region. That gives control over data, integrations and cost, but it also makes your team responsible for backups, upgrades, security patches and uptime during month-end. I compare that honestly with Frappe Cloud or a managed host, looking at who in your team will actually do the work.

The Frappe Framework makes it easy for developers to add custom doctypes, scripts and apps. That is a strength and a risk. I set rules early: prefer configuration and standard features, put custom logic in a separate app rather than editing core files, document each customization with its business reason, and run an upgrade trial on a copy before each major version move.

Some teams also use Frappe to build internal tools that sit beside ERPNext, such as a vendor portal or a quality inspection app. I help decide when that is sensible and when an existing ERPNext feature would do. My ERP integration service covers connections to your product and other systems.

Where ERPNext may not suit a Bengaluru company

ERPNext is not right for every firm here. A supplier to large aerospace or defense programs may face documentation, configuration control and quality requirements that call for specialist software or significant extension, and the cost of building that may outweigh ERPNext's license advantage. A software or IT services company with no physical operations may find ERPNext's projects and timesheets adequate but may be better served by tools designed for professional services.

Small machine shops without anyone technical on staff may struggle with self-hosting and should budget for a managed host and a support arrangement. And a company that expects to customize heavily without developers who know Frappe may end up stuck on an old version.

I give this view because I do not sell ERPNext hosting, licenses or implementation hours. If Odoo or Zoho would fit better, I explain why; the Odoo vs ERPNext comparison and the Bengaluru Odoo consultant page help with that choice. FAQ

Questions About ERPNext Consultant Bengaluru

It can be, if it is set up around jobs, routings and operation costing rather than generic stock, and kept close to standard features. Small shops should plan for managed hosting and support unless they have someone technical in-house. I scope the setup with a real job before you commit.

Yes. Its subcontracting features track material sent to a vendor, the processed parts that come back and the vendor's charges against the job. I design the flow around your actual vendors and test a full round trip, while your chartered accountant confirms the GST documentation.

Yes. I design companies, GSTIN-linked branches, warehouses and inter-unit transfer rules so each site reports separately and owners see a combined view. Your chartered accountant decides how transfers between registrations are treated for tax, and I make sure the documents and postings follow that decision.

Only if someone on your team will own backups, upgrades, security and monitoring. Self-hosting gives control and fits companies with DevOps skills. Otherwise Frappe Cloud or a managed host is safer. I compare the options against the people you actually have.

My role is independent design and oversight. I define the requirements and customization rules, review the custom apps your developers or implementer build, and test them against upgrades. That keeps the advice separate from the build effort, so my recommendations are never shaped by hours I would bill for development.
