Odoo in Australia

Odoo for Australian businesses outgrowing MYOB and Xero add-ons

Where does an Odoo consultant add value for Australian firms?

For an Australian business, an Odoo consultant sets up GST codes so the BAS figures come straight from Odoo, plans the move off MYOB or Xero and its add-ons, decides whether payroll and Single Touch Payroll sit inside Odoo or in a separate tool, and checks Peppol e-invoicing and hosting options. All of it is delivered remotely by me, independent of Odoo and of local resellers.

Last reviewed by Vikas Saroj

Australian companies typically reach Odoo after years on MYOB or Xero, with stock, job costing, quoting and ecommerce handled by a set of connected apps. The apps worked until the business added a second warehouse or a production line, and now reconciling them takes more time than running the business.

Odoo can bring those processes into one system. The Australian checklist is specific though: GST codes that produce a clean BAS, a deliberate decision on payroll and Single Touch Payroll, Peppol e-invoicing for customers who ask for it, and stock spread across states with long freight lead times.

I support Australian businesses remotely and without vendor ties, booking live sessions at times that fit your working day and progressing documents while you are offline.

What I Do

Odoo services for Australian operators

These are the areas I focus on when an Australian business moves its operations into Odoo.

GST and BAS Setup

Taxable, GST-free and input-taxed supplies and capital purchases each get a deliberate GST code, and a test BAS from Odoo is reviewed with your accountant before the first live period.

MYOB and Xero Exit

I map accounts, contacts, items and open transactions out of MYOB or Xero, decide which add-ons Odoo replaces, and switch over at a BAS period end so each return comes from one system.

Payroll Decision

Whether Odoo Payroll covers your awards, allowances, super and STP reporting in your edition, or whether a dedicated Australian payroll tool should post journals into Odoo, decided with HR and finance.

Multi-Site Inventory

Warehouses in several states, inter-branch transfers, reorder rules that respect long freight times, and landed costs for imported stock configured in Odoo Inventory.

Ecommerce and Marketplaces

Connecting Shopify, WooCommerce or Odoo eCommerce with stock, fulfilment and Australian carriers, and reconciling payment provider payouts in accounting.

Implementer Oversight

When an Australian Odoo firm is building your system, I represent you: reviewing designs, testing GST and stock scenarios and assessing change requests before you approve them.

GST, BAS and Australian accounting details in Odoo

Odoo provides an Australian fiscal localization with a chart of accounts, GST taxes and a BAS report. That gives a head start, but a BAS is only as good as the codes on each transaction. Before go-live I work through the cases your accountant expects to see reported:

  • Taxable, GST-free and input-taxed sales, with each product and service assigned deliberately rather than by default.
  • Capital versus non-capital purchases, so acquisitions land in the right BAS labels.
  • Imports, including GST paid at the border and any deferred GST arrangement your business uses.
  • Mixed-use and private-use adjustments where your accountant says they apply.
  • PAYG withholding figures, which come from payroll and need a clear route into the BAS.

ABN details on supplier records, payment terms and remittance advice formats are also worth settling early, because Australian suppliers and customers expect them on documents. Bank feeds should be tested with your actual banks rather than assumed.

Tax treatment is your accountant's call. My job is to make sure Odoo captures transactions so the BAS reconciles to the ledger without spreadsheet adjustments. Wider finance setup is covered on the Odoo Accounting page.

Payroll and STP, Peppol e-invoicing and where Odoo is hosted

Payroll is the decision Australian Odoo projects most often leave too late. Single Touch Payroll reporting, superannuation, awards and leave entitlements make payroll demanding. Check whether Odoo Payroll covers your awards and STP in the edition and version you intend to use, and compare it honestly with a dedicated Australian payroll product that posts journals into Odoo. Businesses with straightforward salaried staff may keep it all in Odoo; those with complex awards usually do better with a specialist tool.

E-invoicing is the second topic. Australia uses the Peppol network, and some customers, especially government agencies and larger enterprises, ask suppliers to send invoices that way. Odoo has added Peppol support, but confirm that it is available in your country setup and edition before relying on it.

On hosting, the main options compare like this:

  • Odoo Online: simplest to run, standard apps and Studio only, no custom code.
  • Odoo.sh: managed hosting for Enterprise with custom modules and staging branches.
  • Self-hosted: on an Australian cloud region if customers or contracts require onshore data, with your team or provider owning operations.

For Odoo-managed hosting, ask Odoo where your database would sit. I record any onshore data requirement before the hosting choice is made.

Australian businesses using Odoo and what they leave behind

In Australia, Odoo suits wholesalers and importers, ecommerce and retail brands, light manufacturers, and trade and service businesses that schedule work across a region. Distance shapes their requirements: stock is often held in more than one state, imported goods arrive with long lead times, and freight is a significant part of landed cost. Odoo Inventory handles multiple warehouses, transfers and reordering, provided the routes are designed around how goods really move.

Typical systems being replaced:

  • MYOB, long established in Australian small business, with history that needs careful mapping.
  • Xero with add-ons for inventory, job costing, quoting or ecommerce, each holding part of the truth.
  • QuickBooks or Reckon in smaller firms.
  • Spreadsheets for production plans, price lists and purchase planning.

I agree a cutover at a BAS period end so every BAS is prepared from a single source. Open receivables and payables, stock on hand by warehouse and fixed assets are loaded and reconciled after trial runs, and retired add-ons are switched off in a planned order so nothing writes to the old system after go-live. See ERP data migration for the method.

Working with Australian implementers, and when Odoo does not suit

Australian businesses have a choice of local and offshore firms that sell and implement Odoo. I work independently of all of them and of Odoo. Clients bring me in to write requirements and a fit-gap before going to market, to compare proposals on the same scope, and to oversee design and testing during the build so GST, stock and payroll decisions hold up. ERP implementation describes my part in delivery.

I will tell you when Odoo is probably the wrong choice:

  • Payroll with complex awards is central and must sit inside the ERP, and Odoo Payroll does not cover your awards.
  • The business is a construction or trade contractor relying on progress claims, variations and retention, where a specialist job system may fit better.
  • Accounting is the only real need and Xero or MYOB already does it well.
  • Group finance spans many entities with consolidation demands better suited to a platform such as Dynamics 365.

When that is the case I lay out alternatives so you can decide. My broader Australian advisory work is on the ERP consultant Australia page and the Australia hub.

FAQ

Questions About Odoo Consultant Australia

Odoo's Australian localization includes GST taxes and a BAS report. Its accuracy depends on correct tax codes on every transaction and on payroll figures reaching it. I configure and test GST scenarios with your accountant and run a trial BAS before the first live period.

Sometimes. If your staff are on simple salaried arrangements and Odoo Payroll covers STP and super in your edition, keeping it inside Odoo can work. With complex awards, many allowances or shift penalties, a dedicated Australian payroll tool that posts journals into Odoo is usually safer. I help you decide with HR and finance.

I list every add-on and spreadsheet in use, decide what Odoo replaces, map accounts, contacts and items, and run trial loads with reconciliation. Cutover is timed at a BAS period end, and old tools are switched off in a planned order once Odoo is confirmed.

Everything is remote. Live workshops are booked at a time that fits your team, taking account of which states use daylight saving. Between calls I keep designs and test scripts moving in shared files and record short videos, so nobody waits for the next meeting.
