How can Zoho People serve a Nigerian employer's HR team?
For a Nigerian employer, a Zoho People consultant sets up staff files with identity, tax, pension and guarantor details, leave rules that absorb public holidays declared at short notice, attendance capture that survives power cuts, and a monthly handoff to the payroll provider that computes PAYE and pension. I design this remotely and independently, while employment and data protection questions stay with your advisors.

HR in a Nigerian company often runs on a mix of paper files, spreadsheets and messages to a payroll officer. Leave balances are argued over, depot staff sign attendance books that nobody reconciles, and the payroll provider receives changes by email the night before salaries are processed. Each month somebody rebuilds the same facts by hand.
I help Nigerian employers turn Zoho People into the dependable source for those facts: who works here, on which terms, how much leave is left and which hours were approved. The work is remote. I review your policies with HR, design the configuration and test it with real cases, while payroll calculation stays with the provider that already handles your PAYE and pension remittances.
Each item closes a gap between what HR records today and what payroll, managers and auditors actually need from it.
Employee records holding identity numbers, tax identification, pension administrator and state of residence, with each field owned by HR and restricted so only the people who process payroll can see sensitive details.
Joiner tasks covering offer acceptance, guarantor forms, credentials, medical checks and equipment issue, split between HR, IT and the line manager so a new hire is not left waiting for a laptop or an email account.
Leave types and approval routes written from your handbook, plus a routine for adding public holidays when the government announces them, so balances and rosters update without HR editing every employee.
Mobile check-in for field staff and device-based capture at depots and plants, with a tested plan for what happens when the generator is off, the network is down or a device loses its clock.
A monthly export of joiners, leavers, changes, unpaid leave and approved overtime, formatted for your payroll provider or package, with a reconciliation step before the provider runs PAYE and pension calculations.
Simple appraisal forms and goal reviews aligned with how your managers actually assess people, kept short enough that line managers in depots and on the road finish them inside the cycle.

A Nigerian staff file carries more than a name, job title and start date. Payroll needs the employee's tax identification, the state they live in, their pension fund administrator and account details, bank information and, in many companies, the guarantor who vouched for them at hiring. When these sit in a cabinet or a spreadsheet, the payroll officer chases them every time someone joins or moves.
In Zoho People I structure the record around those needs:
Outsourced staff deserve a decision of their own. Some employers keep them in Zoho People for attendance and site access only, while the agency handles their pay. Writing that boundary down early avoids a later argument about whose records are correct.
Nigeria's federal government announces public holidays through official statements, and some of them, including the Islamic festivals, depend on the sighting of the moon, so the exact day may only be confirmed shortly before. States can also declare their own work-free days. A holiday calendar typed in once at the start of the year will be wrong more than once.
Zoho People lets HR maintain holiday calendars by location, which matters when staff in different states observe different days. I set up a routine rather than a calendar:
Leave types come from your handbook: annual, sick, maternity, paternity where your policy grants it, study, compassionate and unpaid. Entitlements under the labor law and your contracts should be confirmed by HR or legal counsel. I test each type against a handful of real employees, including a mid-year joiner and someone returning from extended leave, before balances go live.
Attendance capture assumes a working device and a connection. In Nigerian offices, depots and plants, electricity can come from the grid, a generator or an inverter at different times of day, and the network can drop with it. An attendance design that ignores this produces missing punches, angry staff and overtime claims nobody can verify.
I plan the capture method by location:
Every location then needs a fallback. If punches are lost, the supervisor files a regularization request with a reason, and HR sees a weekly report of how often each site relies on it. A site that regularizes constantly has an equipment or discipline problem, and the report makes that visible instead of hiding it in payroll adjustments.
Overtime and lateness rules come from your policy. I configure what HR confirms and test them with real rosters, including night shifts that cross midnight.
Zoho People records the HR inputs; it does not compute Nigerian salaries. Zoho Payroll is offered in some countries only, so check with Zoho whether a Nigerian edition exists for your account before planning around it. In practice, PAYE, pension contributions and other statutory deductions are calculated by a local payroll provider, an outsourced bureau or a package your finance team runs.
The design work is the handoff between the two. Each month Zoho People produces a package the provider can load:
Before the first live month, we run the export against the previous payroll and explain every difference. After go-live, a cut-off date and a sign-off by HR keep late changes from slipping in. Salary amounts themselves can stay outside Zoho People if you prefer, which reduces the number of people who can see them.
The accounting side, where the payroll journal lands in the ledger, is covered on my Zoho Books Nigeria page.
Employee records hold exactly the kind of personal data the Nigeria Data Protection Act addresses: identity numbers, bank details, health information and next of kin. Your legal advisor or data protection officer decides what the Act means for your company. I make the configuration able to follow their advice: field-level access so managers see their team's leave but not salaries or medical notes, exports restricted to named HR roles, retention rules for leavers, and a record of where the Zoho account is hosted. Confirm the data center region with Zoho in writing and pass the answer to your advisor.
Zoho People suits Nigerian companies with office, depot and field staff that want one record and self-service. I would suggest something different when:

No. Zoho People holds the inputs, such as attendance, leave and staff changes. Statutory calculations stay with your payroll provider or software, unless Zoho states that a Nigerian payroll edition is available for your account; ask Zoho or the partner selling the subscription to confirm. I design the monthly export so the provider receives clean, approved data.
HR adds it to the relevant holiday calendars as soon as it is announced, and Zoho People updates leave and attendance for staff on those calendars. We agree in advance how approved leave over the new holiday is treated and who tells shift supervisors, so the update takes minutes rather than becoming a payroll dispute later.
That depends on the device, not only on Zoho People. Before buying, check with the device vendor whether it stores punches locally and how it uploads them, and put it on backup power. For gaps that still occur, supervisors file regularization requests, and HR reviews them weekly by site.
No. I advise independently, with no Zoho license sales and no commissions, so my view on editions, add-ons or an alternative HR tool is not tied to a sale. If you already have an implementer, I can work alongside them or review their configuration on your behalf.
Yes. Policy reviews, design workshops, testing sessions and training all run over video calls, with recorded walkthroughs for managers at depots or in other states. The engagement runs in English. On-site time for a particular milestone is possible by arrangement.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
