How does a Zoho People consultant help a UK business?
In the UK, a Zoho People consultant configures holiday years, absence recording, sickness return-to-work steps, regional bank holiday calendars, rotas and right to work evidence tracking, then defines what passes to the payroll software or bureau that reports to HMRC. Employment law advice comes from your HR advisor or solicitor; my role is making the approved policy work reliably in Zoho People.

British HR teams spend a surprising amount of time on three things: holiday balances people dispute, sickness absence that managers record inconsistently, and rotas that live in a separate spreadsheet. Zoho People can bring all three into one place, but only if the holiday year, part-time pro rata logic and absence process are designed before anything is switched on.
I work remotely with UK companies, from agencies and professional firms to care providers, hospitality groups and warehouses, configuring Zoho People around the contracts they actually issue and the payroll arrangement they already have.
I am not an employment lawyer. Statutory entitlements, holiday pay calculations and contract wording belong with your HR advisor or solicitor. I make the policy they approve run consistently.
The scope follows your contracts, your sites and the payroll arrangement you rely on today.
Holiday year start, part-time and part-year handling as your advisor directs, carry-over rules, bank holiday treatment and booking limits during busy periods, tested against real contract types.
Sickness reporting, self-certification and fit note uploads, return-to-work interviews as tasks and absence trigger reports, so managers follow one process instead of their own.
Onboarding steps that record when a right to work check was completed and by whom, with follow-up reminders for time-limited permission, keeping document copies under restricted access.
Shift templates for care, retail, hospitality or warehouse teams, with weekly offs, swaps approved by managers and attendance compared with the planned rota.
A monthly or weekly export of starters, leavers, changes, unpaid absence and overtime hours to your payroll software or bureau, with a sign-off before the payroll run.
Role-based access to health and identity data, retention rules per record type and a tested routine for responding to an employee's subject access request.
Contracts, handbook and payroll
Rules built and proven
Managers trained, payroll aligned
Holiday is where a UK Zoho People rollout earns or loses trust. The questions are practical: does your holiday year run with the calendar, the financial year or each employee's start date? How are part-time staff pro rated? Are bank holidays included in the allowance or added on top? What happens to untaken days? Each answer changes the configuration.
Statutory minimums and the treatment of irregular-hours and part-year workers are areas where the rules have been revised and where you need current advice from your HR advisor or solicitor. I take their written position and build it in, rather than guessing.
Three British specifics deserve attention:
Opening balances are calculated per employee, checked by HR and signed off, because a wrong figure on launch day undoes months of goodwill.
Most UK HR managers can name the problem: sickness is reported by text to a manager, recorded late or not at all, and no one notices a pattern until it becomes a formal case. Zoho People can enforce a consistent route.
Statutory Sick Pay and any company sick pay are calculated in payroll, not in Zoho People. What payroll needs is accurate absence dates and categories, delivered before cut-off. How triggers lead to formal action is an HR policy matter, and your advisor should approve the wording before managers see it.
Before someone starts, UK employers carry out right to work checks, and for people with time-limited permission, follow-up checks before that permission ends. The method that applies, whether manual document checks, the online share code route or a digital identity provider, depends on the person and on current Home Office guidance, which your HR advisor should confirm.
Zoho People is useful as the record of process rather than the authority on it:
The same onboarding flow gathers what payroll needs from a new starter, such as starter checklist information and bank details, then passes it on rather than keeping a second copy. Contract issue, policy acknowledgments, equipment and system access tasks complete the checklist. For sponsoring employers, sponsor duties carry their own reporting obligations, which normally sit with HR or an immigration advisor outside the system, with Zoho People holding reminders.
UK payroll reports to HMRC in real time through RTI submissions and carries workplace pension duties, and both are firmly payroll territory. Zoho's own payroll product has not covered every country, so check its current UK availability before planning around it. In most UK projects, Zoho People feeds an existing payroll package or bureau.
I design that feed around the bureau's calendar:
Holiday pay, sick pay and pension contributions are calculated by payroll. Zoho People supplies clean inputs. Journals then reach the ledger, a step described on my Zoho consultant UK page.
Employee data also needs care under UK GDPR. Staff can ask for a copy of their data, so I document where personal data sits in Zoho People, who can export it and how HR assembles a response, alongside the data center choice confirmed when the account was opened.
For many British SMEs, Zoho People with a trusted payroll bureau is a sensible combination. It is not the right answer everywhere:
In these cases Zoho People can still hold the employee record, documents and self-service, connected to the specialist system. If the specialist tool covers everything, adding Zoho People may simply duplicate work, and I will say that plainly. For broader platform questions, my UK ERP consultant page explains how I approach selection, and the UK overview sets out how I work remotely with British businesses.
Tell me about your business and current systems. I’ll suggest the most sensible first step.

It can apply pro rata and hours-based allowances through configuration and formulas. The method you must use for irregular-hours and part-year workers is a legal question that has changed in recent years, so take current advice from your HR advisor or solicitor first. I then build and test their approved method against real contract examples.
No. Statutory Sick Pay and company sick pay are calculated in payroll. Zoho People records absence dates, reasons, self-certification and fit notes, and passes approved absence to your payroll software or bureau before cut-off, so the calculation starts from accurate data.
You can use it to record that each check was done, when, by whom and by which method, and to remind HR before time-limited permission needs a follow-up check. The check itself follows Home Office guidance, which your HR advisor should confirm for each case.
Usually yes, through a structured export or, where the payroll software supports it, an integration. I agree the file layout and cut-off dates with the bureau, build the export from approved data and add a sign-off report so HR checks starters, leavers and changes before every run.
Remotely, through video workshops, shared documents and screen-sharing sessions scheduled within UK working hours. You deal directly with me, not an account manager, and I hand over a runbook so your HR team can maintain the setup without depending on me.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
