What does a Zoho Inventory consultant do for a US business?
For American sellers, a Zoho Inventory consultant decides how stock held at your own building, a 3PL and Amazon fulfillment centers is modeled, how Shopify and marketplace orders reach the system, how lots and serials are captured for recalls and warranty claims, and how tariffs and freight reach item cost. I do that remotely, independently, and I tell you when you need a WMS or manufacturing ERP instead.

A typical American product company I talk to sells on Amazon, runs a Shopify storefront, wholesales to a few retail accounts and keeps pallets at a third-party logistics provider in another state. Each of those places reports a different quantity, and nobody can say which one is right before a reorder goes to the supplier overseas.
Zoho Inventory can hold all of those locations in one record, but only if someone decides how each channel and each building is represented, who is allowed to adjust stock, and what happens when an inbound container lands short. That design work is what I do as an independent Zoho Inventory consultant.
I work remotely with US founders, operations managers and controllers, usually inside Eastern or Central business hours with some overlap for the West Coast. I am not tied to Zoho or to any 3PL, so the recommendation can include keeping a tool you already pay for.
Most of the effort goes into channel rules, location design and cost data, because that is where American stock records usually break.
Deciding which of Amazon, Shopify, eBay, Walmart Marketplace or your wholesale portal owns price and listing data, and how orders from each one land as sales orders with the right customer and tax treatment.
Representing Amazon fulfillment stock, your own building and any 3PL as separate locations, so inbound shipments, removals and reserved units are visible instead of guessed.
A weekly routine that compares the 3PL's on-hand report with Zoho Inventory, explains each variance with a reason code and stops silent adjustments from hiding damaged or lost units.
Lot numbers and expiry dates for food, supplements and personal care lines, and serial numbers for electronics and equipment, applied only to the items where a recall or warranty claim makes them worth the extra scanning.
Agreeing how ocean freight, customs broker fees, duty and tariff charges are allocated to each received item, and testing whether Zoho Inventory and Zoho Books can carry that method or need a supporting worksheet.
A plain view of when your volumes, assembly steps or warehouse complexity have passed what Zoho Inventory comfortably supports, with the realistic alternatives laid out side by side.

Keep counts honest after launch
US sellers rarely run a single channel. A common mix is Amazon with Fulfillment by Amazon, a Shopify store shipped from a 3PL, and wholesale or retail purchase orders arriving by EDI or email. Zoho Inventory offers native connections for several of the big marketplaces and storefront platforms, but which ones are available, and how deep each sync goes, changes over time, so I check the current list against your exact channels before promising anything.
The design questions matter more than the connector:
If you sell mainly online, my ecommerce page covers the wider order process.
American companies often spread stock across states without thinking of it as a tax event: a 3PL in one state, Amazon moving units between fulfillment centers in others, a sales rep holding samples somewhere else. In many states, inventory stored there can create a physical presence for sales tax purposes, which is why I ask for a location list early. I do not give tax advice; your CPA or sales tax advisor decides where you need to register and collect.
What I make sure of is that Zoho Inventory can answer their questions quickly:
The parent page on Zoho in the United States covers sales tax setup in the accounting layer. Here the job is giving that layer clean location and shipment data.
Two kinds of US product business need traceability more than most. Food, beverage, supplement, pet and personal care sellers may be asked by a retailer, a regulator or their own insurer to show exactly which customers received a given lot. Electronics, tools and equipment sellers need serial numbers to validate warranty claims and spot returns fraud.
Zoho Inventory supports batch tracking with manufacture and expiry dates, and serial number tracking, at item level. The setup choices I work through with your team:
I then run one recall drill: pick a lot, trace it to customers and see how long it takes. For deeper sector context see food and beverage.
Most of the American companies I meet import at least part of what they sell, and tariff changes have made true landed cost a board-level number. The problem is that the commercial invoice, the freight forwarder's bill and the customs broker's entry summary arrive at different times and in different hands.
Zoho Inventory and Zoho Books handle purchase cost well; how they allocate added charges such as freight and duty across received items is more limited than in mid-market ERP, and capabilities in this area have changed over time. So I start with the method, then test the tool:
The broader trade flow, from supplier deposit to customs broker, is covered on the US trading ERP page.
I would rather say this before you buy than after. Zoho Inventory is a good fit for American distributors, importers and ecommerce brands with straightforward warehouse work. It starts to strain in these situations:
In those cases I compare paths honestly, including ERP options for distribution. My ERP consulting for US companies covers the wider selection work, and the United States hub explains how remote engagements run.

It can represent Amazon fulfillment stock as its own location when the Amazon integration is connected, though the depth of that sync depends on the current integration and your marketplace setup. I keep that stock separate from your warehouse quantities, so reorder decisions see what is actually sellable, what is inbound to Amazon and what is reserved.
Usually, but rarely out of the box. Some 3PLs offer a ready connection, others work through files, the API or Zoho Flow. The key decisions are which system confirms shipments, how receipts are reported back and how often stock is reconciled. I design that exchange and a variance routine before go-live.
It can. In many states, inventory held there, including at a 3PL or marketplace warehouse, may count toward a physical presence for sales tax. That is a question for your CPA or sales tax advisor. My role is making sure Zoho Inventory records every location and transfer clearly so they can make that call with good data.
Partly, depending on current features and your method. Purchase cost is handled well, while allocating freight, duty and broker fees across items is more limited than in mid-market ERP. I test your real import scenario first and, if needed, set up a controlled adjustment process so margins are not overstated.
I work remotely and schedule workshops and check-ins within US business hours, with the most overlap in Eastern and Central time and planned sessions for West Coast teams. Configuration and documentation happen between calls, and on-site visits are possible only by arrangement.
Every business is different. Share where you are today and what you want to fix, and I’ll tell you honestly whether and how I can help.
